Deception Point Page 78

â€Å"Anyhow, Mike,† the message went on, â€Å"tonight was extraordinary. Sort of does right by you to be a researcher, isn't that right? Everybody's discussing how acceptable this searches for NASA. Screw NASA, I state! This looks far and away superior for us! Astounding Seas evaluations probably gone up a couple million focuses today around evening time. You're a star, man. A genuine one. Well done. Magnificent job.† There was quieted chatting on the line, and the voice returned. â€Å"Oh, definitely, and talking about Xavia, to make sure you don't get too huge a head, she needs to razz you about something. Here she is.† Xavia's razor voice went ahead the machine. â€Å"Mike, Xavia, you're a God, whatever. Also, in light of the fact that I love you so much, I've consented to keep an eye on antediluvian wreck of yours. To be perfectly honest, it will be ideal to be away from these punks you call researchers. At any rate, notwithstanding infant sitting the boat, the group has asked me, in my job as installed bitch, to do my absolute best to shield you from transforming into a prideful jerk, which after today around evening time I understand will be troublesome, however I must be the first to disclose to you that you made an error in your narrative. Truly, you heard me. An uncommon Michael Tolland mind fart. Try not to stress, there are just around three individuals on earth who will notice, and they're all exacting marine geologists with no comical inclination. A ton like me. Be that as it may, you realize what they state about us geologists-continually searching for faults!† She snickered. â₠¬Å"Anyhow, it's nothing, a little point about shooting star petrology. I just notice it to demolish your night. You may get a call or two about it, so I thought I'd surrender you the heads so you don't wind up seeming like the blockhead we as a whole know you truly are.† She giggled once more. â€Å"Anyhow, I'm a sorry hard core partier, so I'm staying locally available. Try not to call me; I needed to turn on the machine on the grounds that the goddamned press have been calling throughout the night. You're a genuine star this evening, regardless of your screwup. At any rate, I'll fill you in on it when you get back. Ciao.† The line went dead. Michael Tolland scowled. A misstep in my narrative? Rachel Sexton remained in the bathroom of the G4 and took a gander at herself in the mirror. She looked pale, she thought, and more slight than she'd envisioned. Today's alarm had removed a great deal from her. She thought about to what extent it would be before she would quit shuddering, or before she would go close to a sea. Evacuating her U.S.S. Charlotte top, she let her hair down. Better, she thought, feeling increasingly like herself. Investigating her eyes, Rachel detected a profound exhaustion. Underneath it, however, she saw the determination. She realized that was her mom's blessing. No one mentions to you what you should or shouldn't do. Rachel thought about whether her mom had seen what happened today around evening time. Somebody attempted to execute me, Mom. Somebody attempted to execute all of us†¦ Rachel's psyche, as it had for a few hours at this point, looked through the rundown of names. Lawrence Ekstrom†¦ Marjorie Tench†¦ President Zach Herney. All had thought processes. What's more, more chillingly, all had implies. The President isn't included, Rachel let herself know, sticking to her expectation that the President she regarded far beyond her own dad was a guiltless observer in this puzzling occurrence. We despite everything know nothing. Not who†¦ not if†¦ not why. Rachel had needed to have answers for William Pickering however, up until this point, all she'd figured out how to do was bring up more issues. At the point when Rachel left the bathroom, she was amazed to see Michael Tolland was not in his seat. Corky was napping close by. As Rachel glanced around, Mike ventured out of the cockpit as the pilot hung up a radiophone. His eyes were wide with concern. â€Å"What is it?† Rachel inquired. Tolland's voice was substantial as he informed her regarding the telephone message. A misstep in his introduction? Rachel thought Tolland was blowing up. â€Å"It's most likely nothing. She didn't let you know explicitly what the blunder was?† â€Å"Something to do with shooting star petrology.† â€Å"Rock structure?† â€Å"Yeah. She said the main individuals who might see the misstep were a couple of different geologists. It seems like whatever mistake I made was identified with the structure of the shooting star itself.† Rachel drew a snappy breath, seeing at this point. â€Å"Chondrules?† â€Å"I don't have the foggiest idea, yet it appears to be pretty coincidental.† Rachel concurred. The chondrules were the one residual smidgen of proof that completely upheld NASA's case this was without a doubt a shooting star. Corky came over, scouring his eyes. â€Å"What's going on?† Tolland filled him in. Corky glared, shaking his head. â€Å"It's not an issue with the chondrules, Mike. No chance. The entirety of your information originated from NASA. Also, from me. It was flawless.† â€Å"What other petrologic blunder would I be able to have made?† â€Å"Who the damnation knows? Additionally, what do marine geologists think about chondrules?† â€Å"I have no clue, however she's cursed sharp.† â€Å"Considering the circumstances,† Rachel stated, â€Å"I figure we should converse with this lady before we converse with Director Pickering.† Tolland shrugged. â€Å"I called her multiple times and got the machine. She's likely in the hydrolab and can't hear a damn thing at any rate. She won't get my messages until morning at the earliest.† Tolland delayed, checking his watch. â€Å"Although†¦ â€Å" â€Å"Although what?† Tolland looked at her strongly. â€Å"How significant do you think it is that we converse with Xavia before we converse with your boss?† â€Å"If she has a comment about chondrules? I'd state it's basic. Mike,† Rachel stated, â€Å"at the occasion, we have a wide range of conflicting information. William Pickering is a man acquainted with having clear answers. At the point when we meet him, I'd love to have something significant for him to act on.† â€Å"Then we should make a stop.† Rachel did a twofold take. â€Å"On your ship?† â€Å"It's off the shore of New Jersey. Directly on our approach to Washington. We can converse with Xavia, discover what she knows. Corky despite everything has the shooting star test, and if Xavia needs to run some geologic tests on it, the boat has a genuinely well-prepared lab. I can't envision it would take us over an hour to get some definitive answers.† Rachel felt a beat of nervousness. The idea of confronting the sea again so before long was alarming. Indisputable answers, she let herself know, enticed by the chance. Pickering will need answers. 92 Delta-One was happy to be back on strong ground. The Aurora airplane, in spite of running at only one-half force and taking a circumlocutory sea course, had finished its excursion in less than two hours and managed the Delta Force a solid head begin to take up position and set themselves up for the extra kill the controller had mentioned. Presently, on a private military runway outside D.C., the Delta Force deserted the Aurora and boarded their new vehicle a holding up OH-58D Kiowa Warrior helicopter. Once more, the controller has organized the best, Delta-One idea. The Kiowa Warrior, initially structured as a light perception helicopter, had been â€Å"expanded and improved† to make the military's most current variety of assault helicopter. The Kiowa flaunted infrared warm imaging capacity empowering its designator/laser run discoverer to give self-governing assignment to laser-guided exactness weapons like Air-to-Air Stinger rockets and the AGM-1148 Hellfire Missile System. A fast advanced sign processor gave synchronous multitarget following of up to six targets. Barely any foes had ever observed a Kiowa very close and made due to tell the story. How Language Affects Culture And Woman - 916 Words

Throughout history men have always been consider to be the more dominant and aggressive sex therefore allowing them to take on more of a powerful and leadership like role amongst their community. Although this sort of power has been in play for generations it has allowed for woman to not always be able to express their opinions on a particular subject or be heard by the male population at all. In today’s society we still see many examples of how men are still dominating culture and the language that surrounds it through the idea of muted group theory and the relationship it has between men and woman A prime example of how language affects culture and woman are how we still use certain words to describe objects or people in either a masculine or feminine sense. Words like Mr. and Mrs. show the title of a person but when it comes to woman it shows their marital status. Whereas with men it doesn’t put emphasis on anything other than their gender. This example in todayâ₠¬â„¢s society shows to a sense that woman is sometimes thought of as objects or a piece of property that can be owned rather than a human being with rights and opinions. Another example of language is when people refer to professional jobs in the work force or when referring to a group of people by using a masculine association with each term. The terms policeman, fireman, postman or using the phrase â€Å"you guys† are all examples of how we as a society use masculine identities to describe a group of people that can beShow MoreRelated Sandra Cisneros Writing Essay1278 Words   |  6 Pagesthis author, Sandra Cisneros. Redefining The Tragic Tragedy Of Chinua Achebe s Famous...

Tom White McQuaid Jesuit High School, 2014-2015 Sophomore English Adv. A.M.D.G. Redefining the Tragic The power of tragic heroes in literature is almost immeasurable in that they evoke multiple emotions within the reader. Through pain and suffering, heroes of tragedy fill the audience with not only terror and pity, but also relief through a cathartic experience. Over two thousand years ago, Aristotle first defined what characteristics make up a tragic hero. He claimed that heroes of tragedy must be fundamentally decent, of noble status, and eventually destroyed by a situation that exposes their one tragic flaw. Consider Chinua Achebe’s famous Things Fall Apart: the protagonist of the novel, the once mighty and respected warrior, Okonkwo of Umofia, is the paragon of the Aristotelian definition of a tragic hero. His suicide and loss of power within the tribe is not caused by his negative qualities, but rather his respect to his elders and their traditions. However, there are also characters of literature that do not fulfill all of Aristotle’s requirements and still leave the reader with an overwhelming sense of tragedy. For instance, the main character of John Steinbeck’s Of Mice and Men, the average and short-tempered, George Milton, fails to meet several aspects of the ancient definition. Despite his low social status, George’s murder of his mentally disabled companion, Lennie, consumes the reader with a feeling of both compassion and fear. Also consider The Good Earth by

Tom from Canada vs Hoshi from Japan Free Essays

Culture affects every aspect of a human life. It is also very important while making a managerial decision. The case presented in chapter 5 proves that being born in the Western or Japanese culture determines a lot our attitude to decision-making with all its consequences. We will write a custom essay sample on Tom from Canada vs Hoshi from Japan or any similar topic only for you Order Now According to the information included in the case, Tom is a Canadian manager, who makes decision on his own, without consulting in with his team. He presents very individualistic attitude. It is completely different as far as we consider Hoshi’s way of making decisions. He, on the other hand, spent a lot of time convincing people working with him to agree to the new inventory-control system. Hoshi is a collectivist-manager. Another significant difference between the two managers is that Tom was task-oriented and counted for a quick and positive result of his decision, for an achievement and maybe a promotion, without taking into consideration implications that it might have on his employees. Unlike the Canadian manager, Hoshi paid more attention to the fact how his co-workers will get used to working with the new system. Joint decision making in the Japanese subsidiary had a severe implications for the performance. Unfortunately, it also turned out that just informing subordinates is not effective either. Each of the managers driven by attitudes characteristic of their cultural scripts and they did what they thought was the best for their subsidiaries. However, what would work best is a mix of these two. Tom and Hoshi would get better results if their had found a middle solution before making the final decision and introducing the new system. Tom should not have done the task rush. After being informed, employees were surprised and not really convinced about the idea. This fact should have already attract the manager’s attention so that he hires a coach just in the beginning. If the Tom’s behaviour was any more collectivist, perhaps he would not trust only his own knowledge but would also ask other competent people of his subsidiary on their opinion. Furthermore, Tom did not care enough about his team, he did not really notice the moment just before key employees handed in their resignations. As a result, as being too sure of the fact that what he does is right, he could not react properly while it was essential. Rational decision-making cannot be successful as long as we do not include the indispensable human factor. In my opinion, Hoshi’s biggest mistake was waiting for the consensus. It is obvious that the Japanese culture is much more collectivist that the Western one, nevertheless the role of the manager should always be the same – taking care of his/her subordinates on one hand and making final decisions in the right time on the other. Having consensus as a priority, Hoshi forgot about the task to do and he did not realize when the change was really important for the further operating of the subsidiary. He should have been the person, who despite discussion and egalitarism, regarding people’s and company’s needs do his job. Moreover, he should have also met Mr. Bortolo expectations, it means introducing the system in the reasonable time. The CEO of the company understood characteristics and culture differences and gave the managers choice. But it seems to me that Hoshi overstrained the possibility given and it led him to a failure. To sum up, both managers made some mistakes caused by their cultural scripts. Rush decision making as well as really slow decision making resulted in huge losses for the subsidiaries and for the company as a whole. If Tom and Hoshi exchanged their views, attitudes before and mix them, learnt something from each other, they could be both successful and satisfied with the results they could present. Sales Ethics Is an Oxymoron free essay sample

Conversely, Sales management ethics is the specific component of business ethics that deals with ethically managing the sales function as sales manager’s priorities is to supervise the relationship bonded between the customer and a salesperson by ensuring that the relationship between the customer and salesperson is an honest one. Making the right decision can be very difficult for instance a majority of people would agree that honesty is an important ethical principle. Take in consideration an honest salesperson that have to meet ends of a looming end of month quota and is required to close one big deal to avoid falling short of the number. Will that salesperson fall short or will he or she undertake measures which may be unethical to reach those numbers. Sales Ethics provide aid in helping to shape a beneficial outcome for the concerning parties and stakeholders. Are salespeople more unethical than anyone else? It is proven that Sales managers and salespeople are not more likely to engage in unethical practices than are people with other marketing and management jobs. We will write a custom essay sample on Sales Ethics Is an Oxymoron or any similar topic specifically for you Do Not WasteYour Time HIRE WRITER Only 13.90 / page In reference to (Gene R. Laczniak and Patrick E. Murphy) significant questions are needed to be answered before taking action: is it legal? Will it infringe any regulations or laws enforced by the organisation? Does it contradict moral obligations that are specific to a certain organisation body? It is not always simple to act ethical and to oblige with the regulations denoted by the organisation. ‘It is possible to teach ethics and ethical behaviour; however can these be learnt and be easily enforced within an organisation? ’ You either are or are not (Isnt Business Ethics an Oxymoron? 2008) Hence, some agree that sales ethics is an oxymoron. Acting ethical can be extremely expensive; one of an organisation’s main goals is to maximise profits; if they do not meet breakeven equilibrium point whereby profits equal to costs of production; a loss is incurred dispelling them to be unfit to compete in the market. The organisation making a loss would go bankrupt and would have insufficient capital to fund any operational circumstance unless they borrow the capital from banks which can be very risky depending on the organisation’s liquidity. Striving for a 100% in ethical commitment and regulations in order to be valid is impossible to achieve. Another aim of an organisation is to minimise costs as much as possible, acting ethical may increase costs of production creating a challenge for the company as a whole. When Salespeople are poised with the challenges that may seem impossible to achieve, giving up is the first response. On the other hand, it is not negative to strive for perfection in ethical standards; however to demand a 100% can sometimes bring about an opposite; an uncharted cause of actions that may apply pressure on the employees and stakeholders which may result in a destructive consequence. Additionally; research conveyed that age is positively related to ethical behaviour among sales managers; older sales managers tend to make more ethical decisions and relatively high levels of relativism are associated with less ethical decision making among sales managers. Relativism demonstrates the process whereby an individual reaches moral decisions based on their actions they view to be acceptable when they provided a particular scenario. On the other hand, relatively high levels of idealism are associated with a lower likelihood of hiring a controversial job candidate. Idealism conveys a set of principles where individuals determine morality; a set of standards expected to be abided by with no exceptions or excuses. This is an example of moral philosophy; which deals with systematic methods whereby individuals recognize and resolve decisions having moral content (Hair, J. F, Anderson, R. A, Mehta, R, and Babin, B. J. ) Businesses strive for perfection, an impossible standard which the organisation can only work towards but can never achieve; hence this is the perception viewers may argue upon business ethics being an oxymoron. Conversely; Sales ethics is not an oxymoron because perfection is the impossible to achieve; that doesn’t mean organisations should give up; instead they should strive for the best possible solutions to the obstacles encountered. ‘These solutions aren’t always perfect, but they often represent the best we can achieve. ’ (Johannes, B. 2002) It can be difficult to apply business ethics but nobody and no organisation is perfect; striving to achieve a higher level is the best perception organisations can enact in order to reach several goals set by the organisation. One of the most important stakeholders of sales is the customers. ‘The first sale is always the hardest’ claims (Hair, J. F, Anderson, R. A, Mehta, R, and Babin, B. J. ) if sales people do not sell their product or good, they cannot earn the income to source the needs they require such as shelter, food and water. Therefore the relationship established between the customer and the sales person is vital to the organisation’s employee and employers as a whole. This is where a boundary spanner is introduced; someone to perform his or her job in the boundary between a company and a customer. The salespeople represent the company to the customer and the customer of the company. The sales managers have a unique role in maintain an ethical work and sales climate as it is their duty to make sure morally corrupt individuals are not employed by the firm to put a check on any system providing an incentive for immoral behaviour and are also responsible for the way the firm’s sales force treats its customers. And most importantly; to comply with the sales ethics and standards expected by the organisation. Therefore it is essential to classify the linkage between the customer and organisational company because when making a sale to the customer as they hold certain rights and when there has been a violation of these rights; customers are entitled to claim damages because ‘Customer is always right’ Firstly, customer Vulnerability denotes a fact when customers are at some sort of disadvantage to the company. These include: Ignorance (lack of some vital knowledge, product knowledge, needed to participate in a fair exchange) Naivete (lack of experience or the ability to conduct a transaction or negotiate terms of fair deal) Powerlessness (a lack of either competition within a marketplace or sufficient assets with which to be persuasive) (Hair, J. F, Anderson, R. A, Mehta, R, and Babin, B. J. ) Customers have the right to information and should not be provided with the disadvantages posed by the sales department because this is a breach of sales ethical standards. Consequently, standards conveyed by the company must be enforced and clear to all the stakeholders and the company itself. A code of ethics must be established and enforced within the company; Code of Ethics expresses the values of a firm by specifying in writing specific behaviours that are consistent or inconsistent with those values. These codes must not only be adopted, they must embody the values truly epitomized by the top management sector (Rastogi, Aseem). There are 4 basic types of code of ethics: Company code that defines the ethical boundaries for employees. Professional codes that define ethical boundaries for occupational groups such as advertisers, marketing researchers, sales representatives, doctors, lawyers, accountants. Business association codes that define ethical boundaries for people engage in the same line of business; examples include codes established by direct selling association of America and by the American Association of Advertising Agencies; advisory group codes implemented by the government agencies and other special interest groups for aid purposes. Codes often list employee behaviours that the firm does not condone or accept. Each industry is confronted with somewhat unique ethical situations. Therefore it is extremely important to create an Ethical Work Climate which demonstrates the way employees perceive the organisation culture along with the significant code of ethics. Culture also plays a major role whereby when culture is very strong, employees will tend to share the same perceptions, on the other hand, when a culture is not as strong or identifiable, perceptions may vary considerably from one employee to another. The organisational climate, specifically it’s the way employee’s view their work environment on moral dimensions is extremely significant in achieving the set of moral and sales ethical standards expected. Isnt Business Ethics An Oxymoron? Personally I disagree with the statement of sales ethics being an oxymoron because it is unrealistic to impose such an unrealistic standard on businesses or anything else we do. We should examine each and every ethical policy and question ourselves how do we improve from here? Is the current code of ethics adequate enough? How is the training regime like? Are the stakeholders being treated well enough? I do not believe that sales ethics is an oxymoron due to the fact that we are humans. We all make mistakes, everyone is not perfect; however if we strive for excellence; this is the best outcome we can possibly achieve with fantastic results. We need to extract sophisticated methods which may connect the values we seek to the business organisations; that way school of businesses and top companies are able to support the conceptual framework of continuous improvement in sales management; thus increasing effectiveness and efficiency to boost business ractices. Even if the possible seems impossible, giving up is never an option; there is no dishonour in being less than perfect, if everyone was perfect; this world would never have existed; there is always room for improvement and everyone should strive to get better. The answer is inevitably indeed we can always strive for excellence, sales ethics is not any oxymoron, and it’s an opportunity.

Free Essays on Same Sex Marriages

Same Sex Marriages The proposed legalization of same-sex marriage is one of the most significant issues in contemporary American family law. Presently, it is one of the most vigorously advocated reforms discussed in law reviews, one of the most explosive political questions facing lawmakers, and one of the most provocative issues emerging before American courts. If same-sex marriage is legalized, it could be one of the most revolutionary policy decisions in the history of American family law. The potential consequences, positive or negative, for children, parents, same-sex couples, families, social structure public health, and the status of women are enormous. Given the importance of the issue, the value of comprehensive debate of the reasons for and against legalizing same-sex marriage should be obvious. Marriage is much more than merely a commitment to love one another. Aside from societal and religious conventions, marriage entails legally imposed financial responsibility and legally authorized financial benefits. Marriage provides automatic legal protections for the spouse, including medical visitation, succession of a deceased spouse's property, as well as pension and other rights. When two adults desire to "contract" in the eyes of the law, as well a perhaps promise in the eyes of the Lord and their friends and family, to be responsible for the obligations of marriage as well as to enjoy its benefits, should the law prohibit their request merely because they are of the same gender? If same-sex marriage is legalized, it could be one of the most revolutionary policy decisions in the history of American family law. The potential consequences, positive or negative, for children, parents, same-sex couples, families, social structure public health, and the status of women are enormous. Free Essays on Same Sex Marriages Each individual’s journey through life is unique. Some will make the journey alone, others in loving relationships-maybe in marriage or other forms of commitment. We need to consider our own choices and try to understand the choices of others. Love has many shapes, forms, and colors, yet many people have a hard time coming to that realization. The article, â€Å"State of the Union†, written by John Riley and appearing in Newsday on November 19, 2003, addresses the issues and decisions made about same-sex marriages. On November 18, 2003, Massachusetts’ highest court declared that same-sex couples have a constitutional right to marriage, becoming the first nation to declare this. Many people, both in favor of and against this decision, were interviewed and spoke out as to why they feel how they feel. The real question this article poses is, should same-sex couples have the same rights to marriage as opposite-sex couples? There are many different viewpoints and theories related to this ethical dilemma, which include egoists, social contract theory (Thomas Hobbes), consequentialist and utilitarian beliefs, Immanuel Kant and deontological ethics, and virtue ethics. Each viewpoint and system of belief differs from another, yet they all make very strong, convincing points. Egoists only do what would be in their own best interest to do. They believe that by acting selfishly, one creates a better world. Based on these and many other beliefs of theirs, they would be absolutely one hundred percent against same-sex marriages. Same-sex marriages only really benefit those individuals getting married so there is no rational reasoning as to why egoists would support this decision and they don’t. It is no direct benefit to society or anybody else involved and therefore egoists would not be in favor of this. They are not gaining anything by this Massachusetts’ highest court decision. Also, this court aided gays and lesbians in man... Free Essays on Same Sex Marriages Should Homosexual couples be given the same marriage rights as Heterosexual couples ? Tami Frost Kaplan College The institution of marriage has had an elongated and blemished past. Not always called marriage this sacred state had slipped through history under many impersonations and categories. Monogamy - summarizes an union of male and female or todays same sex couples, so long as the partners are only sleeping with one another. Polygamy - is the practice of one man or woman with numerous spouses of the opposite sex. Often, the need for this type of arrangement came from times of war, affliction or other disaster. Polyamory - is a multiple-partnered marriage whereby the partners get together out of love. Common-Law - is the relationship of a couple without legal ceremony or license. The Puritans moved marriage to a point where love counted and delighting in the state of marriage became commonplace, yet extremely committed. The Victorian period dragged marriage into the closet. Sex was something embarrassing and improper with a quiet understanding that married couples engaged in marital relations, without pleasure and as duty and God dictated for the purpose of procreation. Until as recently as 20 years ago, in some areas of North America women still needed a husband’s signature to obtain a credit card or mortgage. Things have certainly changed.Virtually all scholars agree that we have witnessed a major transition in the meaning of marriage in the years from 1600 to 1995. In 1600, marriage for almost all Europeans and Europeans in America was primarily an economic arrangement negotiated among families in which family considerations of status, future economic stability, and prosperity were the most important considerations in selecting a potential spouse. By 1995, most Americans consider the primary purpose of marriage to be a commitment to emotional and psychological suppor... Free Essays on Same Sex Marriages Abstract Same-sex marriages: A Multivariate Study The recent upsurge in same-sex marriages has been linked to society’s assessment in relation to society’s normative level. Evaluating the variables of the laws that prohibit same-sex marriages from occurring provides information to help society change its perception of same-sex marriages. The study of same-sex marriage helps explore how gay couples are perceived in society. The results support the conclusion that the special laws that concern same-sex couples are not legal. The current acceptance of an idea of gay couples is perceived positively as a regular couple would be perceived. The frustration associated with sex-same marriage that yields little hope of achieving the â€Å"ideal† may provide a key in understanding how same-sex are formed in society was associated with negative image in this study. Free Essays on Same Sex Marriages Same sex marriages The debate over gay marriage is heating up, with San Francisco’s mayor Gavin Newsom decision permitting same sex marriages in a Francisco and the Massachusetts court decision in favor of gay marriage. There can definitely be seen a trend toward the legalization of same sex marriage but there are still hurdles that have to be passed which are guarded by the conservative right. Opponents of gay marriage are giving ridiculous arguments against same sex marriages while avoiding the real reasons behind their refusal which is prejudice, fear, religion, and homophobia. Looking at the struggles the gay community is having trying to be accepted into society as equals is compelling, ever since the early seventies gays have been trying to receive, among other rights, the right to marriage and its benefits and while all other civil right are protected by the 14th amendment somehow the right to marriage has been separated from all the other rights. The arguments against same sex marriage are weak at best, and they do not justify a discrimination against homosexuals. People, weather gay or not, should have the same rights in all aspects of life. The main argument for same sex marriage is that it is a civil right issue and just as miscegenation laws were voted out so does any law that produce separate system of benefits for people according to their sexual preferences. This should be abolished as it discriminates against the minority and is unconstitutional. Arguing that this right is not being infringed upon, because gays can choose not to be gay and to marry a person of the opposite sex at any time is ridiculous. There are various faults in this argument, for start it is based on the idea that homosexuality is fixable and that gays choose to be gay. The fact is that most studies have proven otherwise, none of the so called methods of curing homosexuality has been proven to work. Most experts agree that weather ... Free Essays on Same Sex Marriages Same Sex Marriage â€Å"I do,† these words change people’s lives forever. Whether this phrase is coming from a heterosexual couple or a same-sex couple, it should not be an issue. However, in today’s society this matter has become a reality. It is a constant battle for homosexuals to live with the limitations society imposes on them, such as the ability to marry. The homosexual community faces this problem of discrimination everyday, in which it is illegal for them to live a life of legal monogamy much like heterosexual couples. Same-sex marriages deserve to be legalized in this country. People need to face reality and what the future holds. Society also needs to start worrying about more important issues such as child abuse, terrorism, and sexual abuse, rather than two men â€Å"tying the knot† or two women devoting the rest of their lives to each other. Love is a human right and it should not be taken away from anyone, whether they are gay or straight. Homosexual c ouples should be entitled to the same marriage rights as heterosexual couples. If there is such a thing called separation between church and state, why does it not apply to this concern? The Christian religion and numerous other religions believe homosexuality is a mortal sin. However, if the leaders of these religions would research their material better, they would find Jesus was never given credit for any statement regarding homosexuality. The only piece mentions of homosexuality, the Christian Bible found in the Book of Leviticus. Leviticus says that, â€Å"No man should lay with a man as he lies with woman†, which many scholars now believe was referring to gay prostitutes and not gay persons in general. (King James, Chapter 17). The correlation between the laws of our government and the beliefs of some religions intertwine, which is unconstitutional. Economics for Business Research Paper Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 1500 words

Economics for Business - Research Paper Example With this in mind, the company has been in the forefront of creating subnotebook computer named ultra Personal Computer (UPC) which the Guiness World Records describes as "the smallest full-powered, full featured personal computer" (Oqo 2007). Unlike most of the products in the global business arena, the UPC which is offered by Oqo has not been driven by the demand of customers in the market. In fact, the creation of the product is through the company's effort of determining the evolving computing needs of the high-end clientle (Oqo 2007). Thus, the UPC is a product where the supply is generated first before demand. The demand curve for the UPC can be drawn as a downward sloping demand curve. Though the UPC is generally targeted to individuals who posses higher purchasing power through their level of disposable income, the product also appeals to the mid-level consumers who also wants mobile computing (About Us 2007). However, it should be noted that the high pricing strategy employed by Oqo is generally done to enhance the attractiveness of UPC. Thus, at a much lower price level, demand can be offset. It is also worth mentioning that UPC is a normal good because demand for it generally rises with increases in disposable income. Currently, Oqo is dealing with the rapid increase in demand for its products. The company's press release states that the company braces for demand as corporate clients has been more than eager to test the UPC (Press Releases 2007). Supply Being the pioneer in this technological innovation, Oqo has become the major supplier of UPC in the market. Thus, Oqo can be said to have a monopoly of the entire UPC market. The implication for this is the ability of the company to choose its own level of price and quantity supplied. However, it should also be noted that Oqo cannot fully exploit its power as a monopolist because of the presence of various substitutable goods like personal computers, laptops, and palm tops which are also used for the same function. Price As mentioned above, the innovativeness, quality, and image of Oqo's product commands a very high price in the market. As with any business organization in the market which invests huge capital for research and development, Oqo prices its products to compensate for these costs. The company's pricing strategy is generally putting a large premium over and above production costs. Oqo does not charge a single price for UPCs and practice price discrimination. It should be noted that the company charges different prices to each customer according to how much they are willing to pay. For example, the base price of the company's Model 2.0 has a base price of $1,499 but this can vary according to the product features and specification that the client wants to integrate in the product that he/she is going to purchase (Press Releases 2007). Production The production of UPCs are solely undertaken by Oqo which includes the assembly of components from its various suppliers. The company has a manufacturing plant where production takes place. Being a small company which is only comprised of 105 employees, it maximizes production capacity in order to cope with the burgeoning demand in the

Organizational Behavior Essay Example | Topics and Well Written Essays - 500 words - 6

Organizational Behavior - Essay Example These experiments included a variety of modifications to the work; all modifications resulted in greater productivity because of the fact that the workers were being observed or received special attention. Thus, workers are motivated to perform better when attention is given to them. McGregor’s Theory X is quite similar to the Hawthorne’s effect; however, Theory X proposes that workers are inherently lazy and that they need to be continuously monitored to derive optimum output or performance. Most of the times, managers follow Theory X concept, and tend to supervise, plan, control, and monitor their subordinates’ work. On the other hand, Theory Y proposes that managers assume that people like to work to achieve their goals. Workers are self motivated and are smart, which makes them perform well (Kincki & Kreitner, 10). of Deming‟s â€Å"85-15 rule,† and identify the Four Principles of Total Quality Management (TQM). Also explain the Contingency Approach to Management and compare and contrast human and social capital, and the impacts of positive organizational behavior (POB) as a field in the practice of management. Deming’s 85-15 rule was developed to identify causes for failures in terms of quality and productivity. This rule proposes that 85 percent of failures in an organization are due to management, systems, policies etc and that employees account for only 15% of the failures (Kincki & Kreitner, 12). Through this rule, Deming advises to encourage and motivate employees and not to lower their motivation and commitment by holding them responsible for failures or punishing them for failures. The four principles of TQM include, doing things right the first time and eliminate rework; listening to and learn from employees and customers; adopting continuous improvement as an everyday practice; and to work through team work, trust and mutual respect (Kincki & Kreitner, 21). The contingency approach proposes that

Essay on Shirley Jacksons The Lottery - Message of Social Responsibili

The Message of Social Responsibility in The Lottery      Ã‚  Ã‚   Often, we paint a fairytale view of life for ourselves and our children. Sometimes, an author paints a frightfully realistic picture of life and forces us to reconsider the fairytale. In Shirley Jackson’s story, "The Lottery," a town each year conducts a lottery in which the winner or looser, in this case, is stoned to death by his or her own neighbors. The tradition is supposed to uphold social structure within the town, but in order to comprehend the true meaning of the story you must be able to read between the lines. "The Lottery" is a story about a town that has let its traditions go too far. Also, it is clear that the story contains eye-opening facts that lead me to believe that the author’s intentions were not to write a horror story, but rather cry to all to stop and realize we have problems that we can and should approach, that can make a difference in many people’s lives in our society. The author states that the lottery is conducted every year in the spring. The flowers are blooming and the birds are singing, but this warm town quickly becomes a gloomy, overcast setting for a satanic event. This horrifying ritual ends in bloodshed and death. In our society today, there are large cities which have beautiful parks and people usually keep them clean and pretty th... ...lottery, and that could lead to many more deaths of innocent people. The fact that there are places in the world today that immoral actions occur, means that we, as responsible citizens, are not doing our job. The people of America must wake up and learn to stand up for what they believe in. Works Cited Jackson, Shirley. "The Lottery." The Harper Anthology of Fiction. Ed Sylvan Barnet. Persuasive Writing Essay

The next type of writing we will do is the persuasive essay. In this essay, you will be working to convince your reader of the rightness of your point of view on a specific topic. As I have already said, in some ways every type of writing is a form of persuasion: you are always trying to make your reader see the correctness of your opinion. In this assignment, however, you will stake out your position on a particular topic and argue forcefully and explicitly in favor of it. As always, you want to state your opinion explicitly in your thesis statement (of course, without saying, â€Å"I think that. . . .†). As always, you also want to pick a topic that is fairly focused, narrow, and specific: pick a topic that you can adequately discuss in four to five paragraphs. I will say it again: it is always better to say a lot about a small topic than to try to say a little bit about many aspects of a large topic. (For those who are counting, that is the 3,248th time I have said that thi s year.) Use the first paragraph to state and fully explain your thesis. The rest of your essay should then be the marshalling of evidence in support of your thesis statement and an explanation of and commentary on your evidence. Facts are necessary to support your thesis, but by themselves facts are not enough. You need to explain and comment on them fully; show how these facts support your view and not the view of the opposing side. Try to find three or four really strong pieces of evidence to support your opinion. There is no way you can say everything or think of every point; choose the strongest evidence you can. While arguing in favor of your position, you should also include arguments against the opposing view. For example, if I am writing about the wrongness of capital punishment, I should also include arguments showing the wrongness of arguments made in favor capital punishment. Try to anticipate the other side’s arguments. That will show you are thinking and will also strengthen your argument. In general, it is best to work from your weakest to your strongest argument. As usual, conclusions are difficult. End with a strong, powerful concluding paragraph that brings together your various ideas but does not merely restate them. Certainly do not end by saying something like, â€Å"For all these reasons . . . .† I have listed below a few sample thesis statements and a number of possible topics. Please do not be  limited by my suggestions. As with any piece of writing, you will do the best job if you write about something you care about. I will give you a sample essay. Your essay should be 1-2 pages typed or 4-5 sides handwritten, double-spaced either way. The essay is due Tuesday, 30 January. It is worth 100 points. We will work on the essay in class; you can always show me drafts. Do your best. SAMPLE TOPICS the dress code (or, better yet, some more significant and meaningful issue at school!) your allowance or curfew or some other family issue gun control, abortion, capital punishment (or any other political issue) your view on dating or relationships advocating for a particular religious or spiritual practice: for example, meditate everyday the need for more late-night activities for teenagers the war in Iraq of course, anything else you feel strongly about SAMPLE THESIS STATEMENTS Limiting civil liberties is not an appropriate way to keep this country safe from terrorism. Capital punishment is an unjust and immoral way to punish criminals. A vegetarian diet is a sensible and meaningful response to world starvation and environmental destruction. The dress code provides a meaningful way to minimize the economic competition between students and unite them in their common academic purpose. A vegetarian diet is a sensible and meaningful response to world starvation and environmental destruction. So many Americans are often caught up with finding the â€Å"perfect† diet. While such a diet does not exist, a vegetarian diet provides significant health, environmental, and political benefits. Choosing such a diet is a simple but significant way to make a real difference in one’s own life and the world. First of all, a vegetarian diet is far more healthful than the traditional  American diet that emphasizes meat. A meat-free diet is higher in fiber, lower in saturated fat, and richer in a wide range of vitamins and minerals than a meat-based one. While we do hear conflicting evidence about the various health claims of different diets, nutritionists and scientists seem to agree that a diet rich in fruits and vegetables provides the greatest health benefits. Some people might say that a vegetarian diet is boring: quite the contrary. Compared to the relatively few kinds of meats and ways to prepare them, there are scores of vegetables, fruits, grains, and legumes and almost countless ways to prepare them. A meat-based diet also puts far too much protein into the body, taxing the kidneys and wasting expensive food. As it is, Americans eat too much protein; eating a vegetarian diet is one way to reduce our intake of excessive and expensive protein. Eating a diet based on fruits and vegetables also creates less environmental havoc than a meat-based diet. Raising the animals necessary for the traditional meat-laden diet requires large amounts of land, mountains of processed feed, and the disposal of tons of waste. But a family of four could, if necessary, live for a year off the fruits, grains, and vegetables produced from a few acres of land. And, once the crop is taken, there are few or no ill effects. If the agriculture is done organically, vegetarian eating has even fewer harmful effects upon the land. In an age of diminishing arable land and resources and increasing populations, we need to find ways to get the most nutrition from our land use. A vegetarian diet provides such efficiency. Finally, a meat-rich diet consumes many more scarce resources than a vegetarian diet. It takes about 800 pounds of cattle feed to produce one pound of beef. In a world in which nearly one-fourth of the planet’s population is malnourished or starving, a meat-based diet is simply a luxury we can no longer afford (if we ever could have). In good conscience, it only makes sense to eat lower on the food chain – as we do with a plant-based diet. If everyone in the world ate a vegetarian diet, there would be an immediate surplus of food available to feed people at far lower cost and with wiser use of precious resources. In this way, vegetarianism becomes a moral choice. For reasons of politics, environment, health, and justice, vegetarianism is the only intelligent and compassionate choice in a world of scarce resources and increasing population. It may take some getting used to, but the benefits and rewards of a vegetarian diet – for the planet, the self, and the human race – far outweigh whatever minimal sacrifice may be involved. sentence in bold: thesis statement underlined sentences: topic sentences for each paragraph

Project: U.S- Cuban Trade: When does a Cold War Strategy Become a Cold War Relic? Able to weather a variety of political leaders, economic events, and historical eras, the U.S. embargo of Cuba is the longest and harshest embargo by one state against another in modern history. Following Castro’s overthrow of the Batista government in 1959 and threats to incite revolutions elsewhere in Latin America, the Unites State cancelled its trade agreement to buy Cuban sugar. Then, following a series of increasing hostile events, the United States severed diplomatic relations and initiated a full trade embargo in 1962. Trade between the United States and Cuba stopped. Spurred by the collapse of communism more than thirty years later, Congress†¦show more content†¦The governing strategy executes inhumane rules and regulations that has caused difficulties and anguish among its citizens and has caused families to have fewer interactions and fewer relationships with other citizens. The embargo has constrained the crossing of the borders for Cuban citizens, the exiles of Cuba and the businesses, its subsidiary to not be able to do their business in Cuba without facing penalties. This embargo has forbid the Cuban citizens’ contact to consumer goods that the United States presented. Cuba’s expansion of its infrastructure has also been limited therefore the country continues to be a poor country. Trade helps in business growth and it helps the economy of the country as the different business enterprises can learn from other businesses’ ideas and would help in the growth of the enterprises with its global competitiveness. The embargo may have been effective in the times of Cold war but in the modern times it is perceived as useless especially for the Cuban-American families and business enterprises that are looking for opportunities in Cuba. Devoid of the Cuban embargo the two countries will be able to enjoy economic growth and there will be an abundant circulation of cash between the two countries. Upon the removal of the embargo there will be more business opportunities and better advantages for the trade to open for the two countries. With its

Starving For Perfection Essay - 1853 Words

Starving for Acceptance In today’s society, where physical characteristics are used to measure beauty and success, people are willing to push their bodies to extremes to achieve physical perfection. As an overweight woman, I may be considered a failure of society’s beauty test. However, my high self-esteem and acceptance of my body allows me to not be disturbed by what, to some, may seem as a sign of failure. Unfortunately, there are people whose desire to be accepted by society causes them to develop eating disorders. The two most common are called anorexia and bulimia (WebMD.Com Eating 1). In the United States, researchers have found that Hispanics are diagnosed with eating disorders at about the same rate as whites, while higher rates are found among American Indians. Although the disorders are less common among young people who are Asian and black, there is evidence that blacks are more likely to develop bulimia than anorexia. (MayoClinic.Com 3) Males suffering from anorexia and bulimia are often not correctly diagnosed. Some healthcare professionals consider eating disorders to be a female problem, and therefore, fail to properly diagnose males with these disorders (ANRED Males 1). However, men are just as affected by societies demand for the perfect body. Common Sense By Thomas Paine - 992 Words

A poet once said, â€Å"There are two documents in American history that made America what it is today. Common Sense by Thomas Paine was inspiring to many American colonists as it was persuasive in showing how the colonists should have their own independence. Paine appealed the average citizen’s rationale, hence the title Common Sense. Paine’s pamphlet illustrates the importance of independence, and argues that colonial life under British rule was detrimental to America’s potential to become prosperous. In a fairly lengthy, but readable style, Paine discusses the differences between democracies and monarchies, specifically Great Britain’s. Paine shows how monarchy creates large disparities between the Kings and Queens and the average citizens, and the citizens have no voice in who becomes their ruler. By contrast, he believes that a government under democratic rule elects leaders based on the demand of the people. Much shorter, but just as equally influe ntial, The Declaration of Independence was a famous document that was authored primarily by Thomas Jefferson. Jefferson mentions how the colonies should be considered as equals with their English counterparts and why it is important for man to have freedom. Paine and Jefferson both want Americans to succeed, but they also have some notable differences in their documents. How does Bennett present different teaching styles in ‘The History Boys’ Free Essays

Bennett presents three contrasting teaching styles in the History Boys through the characters of Hector, Mrs Lintott, and Irwin. All three of the characters have their own unique attitude towards the boys’ impending Oxbridge examinations, putting the boys in the difficult position of having to keep a reasonable balance between teaching and learning styles whilst making every effort to maintain the good-humoured relationships they have with each of their teachers, as well as striving to achieve well in their examinations. Whilst Hector brands the boys’ Oxbridge aspirations as ‘silliness’, he has a dedication and love for knowledge which he imparts during his lessons, and generally, to his students. We will write a custom essay sample on How does Bennett present different teaching styles in ‘The History Boys’? or any similar topic only for you Order Now While on the subject of General Studies, he quotes ‘All knowledge is precious whether or not it serves the slightest human use’, which encapsulates, in one phrase, how highly he values any kind of knowledge as well as how he tries to teach the boys. It shows that Hector sees knowledge as precious- he has an unconventional kind of teaching style which he sees as vital to the boys’ education of life in general, and of particular importance is that the boys are aware of this. As Timms says, ‘Mr. Hector’s stuff’s not meant for the exam, sir. It’s to make us more rounded human beings. ‘ when the boys are questioned by Irwin on Hector’s teaching style. Furthermore, Hector believes in giving the boys the ability to defy the education they have been given- ‘You give them an education. I give them the wherewithal to resist it’ he says, in conversation with factual Mrs. Lintott. Hector’s teaching style is lively and compassionate, teaching the boys to love what they do. In contrast, Irwin, who is hired to prepare the boys for their exams, is totally centered on exam techniques. When reflecting on the essays he has just marked, he remarks that the other boys and girls who ‘have been to Rome and Venice, Florence and Perugia’ will ‘know when they come to do an essay like this on the Church on the eve of the Reformation that some silly nonsense on the foreskins of Christ will come in handy. And doing so he advises the boys to make their essays controversial so they stand out, regardless of what is true or what is considered correct or disciplined- in fact, Irwin approaches History in a rebellious and oppositional way to spark questioning. Iriwn’s bold stance on education is summed up when he says that ‘truth is no more at issue in an examination that thirst at a wine-tasting or fashion at a strip tease’- yet again reinforcing the idea that if the boys want to get in to Oxford and Cambridge, they need to make their essays contentious and different rather than ‘Dull. Read also History Quizzes Dull. Abysmally Dull. ‘ His idea that ‘silly nonsense’ will catch the examiner’s eye comes into conflict with Hector’s teaching style and the ‘token’ of Hector’s trust when Irwin finds out that the boys have acquired countless ‘gobbets’ from Hector’s lessons that he believes would be useful for the exams- ‘Don’t tell me that’s useless knowledge’, he says, pointing out that any piece of knowledge or quote or ‘gobbet’ could help them get through their exams. Hector’s compassionate teaching is at complete odds with Irwin’s edgy style, and even though he disagrees wholeheartedly with the way Irwin approaches learning- ‘call them what you like, but do not call them ‘gobbets’- he is willing to help Irwin do his job- ‘However, if you think it will help, I will speak to them. ‘ Mrs Lintott, the boys’ history teacher, has a very factual and straightforward approach to teaching which sees the boys through their A levels- ‘Their A levels are very good. And that is thanks to you, Dorothy. She is more concerned with facts than anything else, and her belief is that ‘Plainly stated and properly organised facts need no presentation, surely. ‘ But the headmaster of the school is looking for something different, rather like Irwin- ‘Think charm. Think polish. Think Renaissance Man. ‘ Mrs Lintott is frustrated by the need for ‘presentation’ and the fact that the dons fall for the tactics employed by people like Irwin, however, and compares it to ‘A sprig of parsley, you mean? Or an umbrella in the cocktail? outlining her dry, sarcastic, cynical humour, and showing her disrespect for jazzing up facts to be acknowledged and noticed, as Irwin does. As Rudge puts it, when speaking to Mrs Lintott about Irwin, ‘You’ve force-fed us the facts; now we’re in the process of running around acquiring flavour. ‘ In conclusion, Bennett presents three different teaching styles in the play by showing the audience not just the teachers’ lessons but by giving the audience an idea of what the teachers’ personalities and outlooks on life are, showing that teaching and learning involve so much more than exam results.
